STORY
Stout was Toyota's bonneted one-ton-plus truck, sold through the Toyota Store. The name appeared in June 1959, when the Toyopet RK23 truck was rebadged after a naming contest among dealer and Toyota staff, and the second Stout of 1 July 1960 brought American flat-deck styling to Japan ahead of the country's passenger cars, with a wrapped curved windscreen, no vent windows, 1,750 kg of payload and a hypoid final drive that lowered the floor. The RK100 of July 1962 answered Nissan's redesigned Junior with a two-ton version: a 1,900 cc 3R-B rated 80 PS, plus four headlamps. A 1967 facelift standardised the 2,000 cc 5R, made the truck an RK101 and changed the name from Toyopet Stout to Toyota Stout. The third Stout of 7 March 1979 borrowed the third Hilux 4x4 cab and went mostly for export until March 1989.
