JZA80 Supra GT500 (2005)

JZA80 3UZ-FE V8 era · 2001–2006RWD

For the early 2000s the JZA80 Supra switched from the turbo four to a naturally aspirated 4.5-litre 3UZ-FE V8 for improved torque and driveability, and dominated the GT500 class as it transitioned into the Super GT era. Supras took the Drivers' title in 2001 and again in 2002, when Juichi Wakisaka and Akira Iida edged Honda's NSX by a single point. In 2005 Yuji Tachikawa and Toranosuke Takagi won the Drivers' and Teams' titles for Cerumo, coming from 14 points down in a torrential-rain Suzuka finale, in the fourth-generation Supra's final season as Toyota's flagship (it was campaigned through 2006).

STORY

The Supra ran in the top division of the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship from the 1994 season, when the class was still labelled GT1, entered by SARD, Blitz and Shift Point on the JZA80 shell; Blitz opened the year with the road car's 2JZ-GTE and moved to a 2.0-litre 3S-GTE turbo four later. Castrol TOM'S won the 1997 title with Michael Krumm and Pedro de la Rosa on a tie-break at 67 points; Cerumo's Hironori Takeuchi and Yuji Tachikawa took 2001 and Team LeMans' Juichi Wakisaka and Akira Iida 2002. For 2003 the turbo four gave way to the 3UZ-FE V8, 5.2 litres that year and 4.5 from 2004, and Tachikawa with Toranosuke Takagi won the 2005 title. Most teams moved to the Lexus SC430 for 2006 while SARD and Tsuchiya Engineering ran Supras through that season. The name returned in 2020 under Class One rules, and Yuhi Sekiguchi and Sho Tsuboi won the 2021 title for TGR Team au TOM'S.
