STORY

The Tacoma was drawn for North America by Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, and Toyota introduced it at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February 1995 as its sixth-generation compact pickup. Every first-generation truck came from NUMMI in Fremont, California, with 2.4 and 2.7-litre fours and a 190 hp 3.4-litre V6. The second generation, shown at Chicago on 4 February 2004 for the 2005 model year, grew into the mid-size class, and assembly spread to Baja California, where pickup output began in December 2004, and then in 2010 to San Antonio as NUMMI wound down. The N300 followed at Detroit on 12 January 2015 with a 278 hp 3.5 V6. For the fourth generation Toyota dropped the V6 for a turbocharged 2.4 rated up to 278 hp, or 326 hp as the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.
