The Story

Why the Tazz matters

The Tazz comes from the sixth-generation Toyota Corolla, the E90, introduced in 1987. Toyota South Africa began building the E90 in October 1988. The five-door hatchback was sold there as the Toyota Conquest, and the four-door sedan kept Corolla badging. In October 1996 an entry-level Conquest Tazz was added. It was renamed the Toyota Tazz in October 2000. South African engines for the E90 range included a 1.3-litre 2E and a 1.6-litre 4A-F at launch, a 1.6-litre twin-cam 4A-GE in sporty versions, and a 1.8-litre 7A-FE from the early 1990s. The Tazz was sold as a low-cost, simple car for the local market. South African production of the E90 range ended on 5 July 2006, and the next Corolla (E100) followed it in the Corolla line.
