STORY

Toyota slotted the Town Ace between the Liteace and the Hiace on 4 October 1976, a cab-over van with its four-cylinder engine under the front seats, 1,166 cc or 1,588 cc at first, with trucks following in October 1978. Daihatsu built it from the start and Toyota Auto Body joined in October 1982, a month before the YR and CR20 and 30 wagon reached Toyota Corolla Store on 8 November alongside two differently badged siblings: the wagon-only Masterace Surf, which Toyota Store sold with SAE rectangular four headlamps and thick urethane bumpers, and Daihatsu's own Delta Wide Wagon. The SR40 and CR50 Townace Noah of October 1996 went semi-cab-over and traded part-time four-wheel drive for full-time. Since February 2008 the badge has covered the S400 van and truck, planned jointly with Daihatsu but engineered and assembled by Daihatsu at Astra Daihatsu Motor in Indonesia.
