Publica 800 UP30 2U

P30 · 1969–1978RWD

The UP30 is the Publica 800 sedan, powered by the 790 cc air-cooled two-cylinder boxer 2U. The engine held the car to about 120 km/h, with rear drive and a manual gearbox. The January 1972 facelift dropped this engine, because an air-cooled boxer could not meet Japan's emissions rules.

STORY

Toyota 1000 was the name the second-generation Publica, the P30, carried abroad and also wore as a Japanese grade. It reached Japanese showrooms on 1 April 1969, a size larger than the first Publica and sitting on a shortened Corolla wheelbase. The 993 cc 2K four at 58 PS became the volume engine, the SL grade took the 1,077 cc K-B at 73 PS at 6,600 rpm until a 1,166 cc 3K replaced it that autumn, and the air-cooled 790 cc 2U-C boxer stayed on the sheet at 40 PS until the facelift of January 1972 dropped it. Two-door sedan and van bodies opened the range and a pickup was added in October 1969. Takaoka built the car from April 1969 until January 1970, when assembly passed to Hino and Daihatsu. The sedan gave way to the KP60 Starlet in February 1978 and the pickup carried on to August 1988.
