STORY
The Copen was Daihatsu's car, not a Toyota one. Daihatsu launched the first kei convertible of the name on 19 June 2002 and replaced it with the LA400 series on 19 June 2014, built on a stiffened D-Frame structure with bolt-on resin outer panels. Toyota's version came much later, on 15 October 2019, as the Copen GR Sport, assembled by Daihatsu at the Copen Factory inside its Ikeda plant and sold at Toyota, Toyopet, Corolla and Netz outlets from 2,380,000 yen. Daihatsu developed it with help from Toyota Gazoo Racing, adding a front underbody brace, a reworked centre brace, retuned springs and dampers, BBS forged 16-inch wheels, and bumpers and underfloor spats that Daihatsu credits with cutting body lift by about 10 percent. In September 2025 Daihatsu said production of the car would end in August 2026.
