TS050 Hybrid (2016)

TS050 (2016 spec) · 2016–2017AWD

Toyota's Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) challenger, replacing the naturally-aspirated V8 TS040 with an all-new 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 and an 8-megajoule hybrid system, the top energy class then permitted. In its 2016 debut it famously lost the 24 Hours of Le Mans while leading with under six minutes to go, the No.8 stranded on the pit straight, handing victory to Porsche. In 2017 Kamui Kobayashi set a Sarthe lap record of 3:14.791, but reliability again denied a win as Toyota finished runner-up to Porsche in the WEC.

STORY

Toyota Gazoo Racing revealed the TS050 HYBRID at Circuit Paul Ricard on 24 March 2016, dropping the TS040's naturally aspirated 3.7-litre V8 for a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6, and lithium-ion batteries in place of supercapacitors moved the car into the WEC's 8 MJ hybrid class, with combined output quoted at 735 kW. The 2016 Le Mans unravelled minutes from the flag when the leading number 5 car of Kazuki Nakajima, Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi lost turbocharger control, traced to a defective air line to the intercooler. On 17 June 2018 the number 8 car of Nakajima, Buemi and Fernando Alonso led a one-two finish at the 86th running, the first Le Mans win for a Toyota entry at its twentieth attempt. Car number 8 won again in 2019 with the same crew and in 2020 with Brendon Hartley in place of Alonso. The GR010 HYBRID took over for 2021.
