STORY

Toyota revealed the Yaris Cross on 23 April 2020, after the Geneva show it was meant for had been cancelled. Japanese sales began on 31 August 2020 with a 1.5 M15A-FKS petrol or an M15A-FXE hybrid on the GA-B platform, the hybrid offered with the E-Four rear motor that the Yaris hatchback had introduced to Toyota's compact range the year before; Toyota Motor East Japan built it at Ohira and Iwate. European cars came instead from Onnaing near Valenciennes, where production started on 5 July 2021 toward a target of 300,000 a year. A GR SPORT grade reached Japan on 8 August 2022, and Europe gained a Hybrid 130 system announced on 21 November 2023, rated 96 kW against the earlier 85 kW. Asian markets have a separate Yaris Cross, the AC200, which Daihatsu developed on the DNGA-B platform and which is a different car.
