The Yaris WRC debuted at the 2017 Monte Carlo Rally and marked Toyota's return to the World Rally Championship. Four-time world champion Tommi Makinen oversaw its development and operation, and the cars ran under the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT banner. It used a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline-four (GI4A) with all-wheel drive, a six-speed transmission, a 2,511 mm wheelbase and a weight of 1,190 kg. The team won the manufacturers' title in 2018. Ott Tanak and Martin Jarveoja won the drivers' and co-drivers' titles in 2019. Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia won them in 2020 and again in 2021, when Toyota also took the manufacturers' title. Across its career it took part in 58 races, with 26 wins and 59 podiums. A car based on the GR Yaris had been planned for 2021 but was dropped, and the GR Yaris Rally1 replaced the Yaris WRC from 2022.
