STORY

Toyota showed the car as the Yaris at the 1998 Paris show and put it on sale in Japan on 13 January 1999 as the Vitz, a Netz Store model succeeding the Starlet, with a 70 PS 1.0-litre four. It took the European Car of the Year title for 2000, a first for Toyota, and shared Japan Car of the Year that season as part of a three-car entry with the Platz and the Funcargo. The XP90 of 2005 and the third generation that reached Japan on 22 December 2010 kept the split naming, the Japanese hatchback staying Vitz while export markets used Yaris, while the XP150 of March 2013 went out as the Vios across much of Asia. Toyota unveiled the XP210 on 16 October 2019 and launched it in Japan on 10 February 2020, retiring the Vitz name at last; that generation won European Car of the Year 2021, twenty-one years after the first.
