The GTR launched in 1999 as the successor to the earlier Ultima Sport/Spyder and was produced for some 16 years in kit and turnkey form. A GTR720 set a 0-100-0 mph record of 9.4 s and, at the time, the fastest Top Gear Power Lap (1:12.8). From 2001 the same car was also sold open, as the Can-Am, named after the Canadian-American Challenge Cup and its open Group 7 prototypes. It shared the spaceframe, the Chevrolet V8 and the Porsche/Getrag transaxle, but was more than a roof removed: only the nose and side panels carried over, and it took a new roll cage, reworked bulkheads and modified door frames. Both names were retired in 2015, replaced by the Evolution coupé and convertible.
Ultima's long-running lightweight mid-engined coupe, a road-legal race car built around American V8 power and a tubular spaceframe weighing under 1 tonne. Its very high power-to-weight ratio let it beat cars that cost many times more.
