Volkswagen presented the ID.4 on 23 September 2020 as an electric SUV on the MEB platform, and series production had already begun in August at Zwickau. In April 2021 a jury of 93 journalists named it World Car of the Year, ahead of the Honda e and the Toyota Yaris. On 26 July 2022 the company began building it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, its first electric vehicle assembled in the United States, at first with an 82 kWh battery in rear- or all-wheel drive and a 62 kWh rear-drive version due later that year.
The ID.4 is a compact electric SUV and Volkswagen's first mainstream global EV built on the dedicated MEB platform, launched for 2021. It is the core of the brand's shift to electric cars and is produced in several regions, including at the Chattanooga plant for North America.
