STORY

The Volkswagen LT was launched in 1975 as a van in 2.8, 3.1 and 3.5 tonne gross weight classes, with a 2.0-litre petrol engine from the Audi 100 rated 75 hp and a 2.7-litre Perkins diesel of 65 hp. Volkswagen added its first own six-cylinder diesel, a 2.4-litre, in the late 1970s. More than 470,000 first-series LTs were built through 1996, when the second generation arrived, developed with Mercedes-Benz and sharing its body shell with the Sprinter. Production of that LT2 in Hannover ended in 2006, and the Crafter took over the same year.
