STORY

The Volvo 140 series, launched in 1966, replaced the Amazon. It set the boxy, safety-first three-box design that shaped Volvo for decades. It had a dual-circuit triangular-split braking system and front disc brakes as standard. It also brought the three-digit naming system: the first digit meant the series, the second the number of cylinders and the third the number of doors. Roughly 1.2 million were built before the 240 succeeded it in 1974.
