The Story

Why the 164 matters

The 164 of 1968 took the 140 series body and gave it a nose 10 cm longer to fit a new 3.0-litre straight six, the B30, which breathed through two Zenith-Stromberg carburettors and made 145 hp, given as SAE by Volvo. Electronic fuel injection came with the 1972 model year. In 1974 assembly moved to the Kalmar plant, and in the last model year, 1975, more or less every car built went to the United States while the 264 was already in production. The 164 was built from 1968 to 1975.

Built on a lengthened 140 platform with a distinctive upright grille, the 164 used the 3.0-litre B30 straight-six, later fuel-injected as the 164E, to serve as Volvo's premium six-cylinder saloon.
