The Volvo 340, launched in 1976, originated from the Dutch DAF operation that Volvo had absorbed and was built at Born in the Netherlands. Initially fitted with a Renault engine and an unusual rear-mounted transaxle with optional DAF-derived Variomatic transmission, it became a big seller in Europe. The larger-engined 360 arrived in 1982 with 2.0-litre four-cylinder red-block power, and despite the badge it never had six cylinders. The range ran until 1991.
The Dutch-built compact Volvo (ex-DAF), a practical rear-drive hatchback and sedan of the 1980s.
