STORY
Work on what became the 440 began in 1978 under the project name Galaxy. Volvo presented the five-door hatchback in June 1988, two years after the 480 coupe. All engines were four-cylinder single-overhead-cam units from 1.6 to 2.0 litres, including a 1.7-litre turbo. From 1 December 1991 production passed to NedCar, owned by the Dutch state, Volvo and Mitsubishi Motors, and the 440 and 460 ended in November 1996 after the S40 and V40 had been built alongside them for more than a year.
