STORY

Volvo launched the 760 GLE in February 1982 and later credited it with saving its car business. The cheaper four-cylinder 740 followed in early 1984 and the estate in 1985, with the 700 series offering engines of up to 147 kW (200 PS) by the early 1990s, according to Volvo Austria. After a facelift in autumn 1988 the 740 ran alongside the 940 for two years from August 1990. Volvo's figures list 650,443 saloons and 358,952 estates, a little over one million cars.
