STORY

Volvo launched the 940 in autumn 1990 together with the 960, and the Torslanda plant started building both that year. The 940 largely replaced the 740 and came with four-cylinder engines in GL, GLT and Turbo versions, replacing all 740 models except the base 740 GL. The front-wheel-drive 850 with its transverse five-cylinder followed in 1991 as a different kind of Volvo. The 940 ran for just over eight years and ended in 1998.
