STORY

The first S40 sedan was built at NedCar in Born, the Netherlands, a joint venture that began with Volvo, Mitsubishi Motors and the Dutch state. Mitsubishi's Carisma, made for Europe from 1995 to 2004, was co-developed with Volvo and shared a floor pan with that S40, while the wagon on the same basis carried the V40 name. The second-generation S40 sedan debuted as a 2004 model, and the V50 wagon built on it replaced the V40. The V50 stayed in the Australian range until June 2012, and in the US the S40 and the V50 ended with the 2011 model year.
