STORY

The XC90 reached the market in 2002 and stayed in production at Volvo's Gothenburg plant for twelve years. When the last first-generation car left the line in July 2014, 636,143 had been built at Torslanda between 2002 and 2014, and that final car went to the Volvo Museum next door to the factory. During that run a Yamaha-built 4.4-litre V8 was added to the range alongside the five- and six-cylinder engines. The replacement, the second-generation XC90 of 2015, was scheduled to start production in January 2015 and was the first Volvo built on the Scalable Product Architecture platform.
