The 1.3 replaced the two-stroke engine of the Wartburg 353 with the 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine of the second-generation Volkswagen Polo, rated at 58 PS. Under a 1984 agreement, IFA assembled the engine under licence at the Barkas plant in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Production ran from October 1988 to April 1991, and the Eisenach company was dissolved after German reunification.
The Wartburg 1.3 was an East German family car built in Eisenach from 1988 to 1991, with a four-stroke 1.3-litre engine from the Volkswagen Polo. It was offered as a sedan and as the Tourist wagon.
