Launched in July 2020, the Hongguang MINI EV is a four-seat electric microcar that became one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the world. In 2021 and 2022 it was among the best-selling EVs in China month after month. Its success rested on an extremely low entry price of around 28,800 yuan, minimal equipment and a small LFP battery sized for short urban trips. It belongs to China's A00 microcar class and initially launched without a driver airbag on the base trim. Wuling later widened the line with the MINI EV Macaron, the Cabrio convertible and the more upmarket MINI EV GameBoy.
The Wuling Hongguang MINI EV is a tiny four-seat battery-electric city car launched in 2020 and arguably the most important vehicle in Wuling's history. It is barely three metres long, with a compact single electric motor and a small LFP battery giving roughly 120 to 300 km of range. At launch it cost around the equivalent of 4,000 US dollars. That very low price made it a huge success. It briefly outsold the Tesla Model 3 in China and became one of the world's best-selling EVs, with over a million units delivered. It defined the ultra-cheap micro-EV segment and cemented Wuling's people's-car reputation.
