Hand-beaten polished aluminium, W12 dreams
Designed by J Mays and inspired by the silver Auto Union Grand Prix racers of the 1930s, the Avus quattro wore a body of hand-beaten polished aluminium over an Audi Space Frame. Its intended 6.0-litre W12 was still in development, so the Tokyo show car ran a precisely painted wood-and-plastic dummy engine. Audi quoted 502 hp, a sub-3-second 0-60 and a 211 mph top speed. It now resides in the Audi museum in Ingolstadt.
