The mid-engined aluminium sports car that was Audi's R8 two decades too early.
A sensation at the 1991 Frankfurt show, the quattro Spyder was a compact mid-engined sports coupe built on an aluminium tubular spaceframe with a lightweight aluminium body and removable glass roof panels. It borrowed a transverse 2.8-litre V6 from the Audi 100 and drove all four wheels through a Torsen centre differential, showcasing Audi's aluminium construction and quattro expertise years before the R8 made the formula reality.
