Autozam AZ-550 Sports Concept

The gullwing kei concept that became the AZ-1

Mazda's Autozam brand showed the AZ-550 Sports at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show in three versions exploring a mid-engined kei sports car. Type A was a red car with pop-up headlights and gullwing doors, Type B a rougher tuned-look sports car with conventional doors, and Type C a design inspired by Mazda's Group C Le Mans prototypes in white-and-blue livery. The strong public and press response led Mazda to put the car into production, choosing Type A as the basis for the gullwing-doored Autozam AZ-1 kei car of 1992.
