A radical low-cost, ultra-frugal city car laboratory
The Ecobasic was a rolling laboratory exploring an economical, spacious and safe city car. Built on an aluminium structure with plastic panels for a 750 kg kerb weight, it used a 1.2-litre Multijet common-rail diesel and a robotised gearbox to claim theoretical consumption as low as 2.8 L/100 km. Around ten units were built before the project ended, but its ideas fed into later Fiat small cars.
