Michael Essa
Drift legend · USA

Garage-built giant-killer.
The underdog story of Formula Drift, a BMW-driving privateer who beat the factory-backed teams to a championship.
Essa won the 2013 Formula Drift championship running his own BMW largely as a privateer, building and engineering his car out of his own shop against far better-funded factory programs.
That title made him the definitive underdog hero of the series: proof that engineering ingenuity and driving skill could still beat big budgets at the top level.
He remains a symbol of the grassroots, garage-built spirit that drifting came from.
