Aerial view of the Long Beach Grand Prix street circuit

FD season opener. Concrete walls, sea air, the biggest American drift crowd of the year.

A 2.0 km street circuit around the Long Beach Convention Center, every April, hosting Formula Drift's season opener. Concrete walls, painted curbs, real port-city background, and the biggest in-person crowd of any FD round of the season.

For American drift specifically Long Beach matters because the season narrative starts here. Every championship has been decided downstream of who showed up on weekend one with a car that worked. The street walls do not forgive setup mistakes; the qualifying tape is a litmus test for who came ready.

The fact that the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach uses the same weekend a fortnight earlier is a coincidence drift culture has stopped being surprised by. The crowd that fills the grandstands is older, younger, sportier, more car-cultured than any drift audience anywhere, Long Beach is where drift is most-watched in person.
