The nameplate began in 1996 as the Challenger, also sold as the Montero Sport, and the same vehicle carried the names Pajero Sport, Montero Sport and Challenger depending on the market. Mitsubishi presented the all-new Pajero Sport on 1 August 2015, built at the Laem Chabang plant in Thailand with a 2.4 L MIVEC turbo diesel and an 8-speed automatic that was a first for a Mitsubishi model. The maker claimed 17 percent better fuel economy than the predecessor, without naming a test basis. A facelift followed in Thailand on 25 July 2019 with eight-inch displays, Lane Change Assist and a powered tailgate.
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a mid-size body-on-frame SUV, known as the Pajero Sport in most markets and derived from the Triton pickup platform. It offers rugged off-road ability with more road-oriented packaging than the full-size Montero.
