XX 2000 M-EU RWD manual Liftback

A40/A50 · 1978–1981RWD

The 2000 XX used the 2.0-litre M-EU inline-six with a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and a liftback body, sold in Japan from 1978 to 1981. The smaller six was offered for tax reasons, as Japanese annual road tax rose with engine size above 2.0 litres.

STORY

The Celica XX went on sale in Japan in 1978 as the home-market version of the Celica Supra, a longer Celica with an inline-six engine. The first generation offered a 2.0-litre M-EU and a 2.6-litre 4M-EU, with a 2.8-litre 5M-EU added in 1980. Engine size mattered in Japan, where annual road tax rose above 2.0 litres. The second generation, the A60, arrived in 1981 with the 1G-EU 2.0-litre six and the 2.8-litre 5M-GEU 2800GT at 175 PS. A 2000GT with the twin-cam 1G-GEU followed in 1982, together with the M-TEU turbocharged 2.0-litre, which later gained an intercooler. Toyota sold the car through its Corolla Store dealerships. In 1986 the third-generation car dropped the Celica prefix and became simply the Supra in Japan as well.
