The Celica XX went on sale in Japan in 1978 as the home-market version of the Celica Supra, a longer Celica with an inline-six engine. The first generation offered a 2.0-litre M-EU and a 2.6-litre 4M-EU, with a 2.8-litre 5M-EU added in 1980. Engine size mattered in Japan, where annual road tax rose above 2.0 litres. The second generation, the A60, arrived in 1981 with the 1G-EU 2.0-litre six and the 2.8-litre 5M-GEU 2800GT at 175 PS. A 2000GT with the twin-cam 1G-GEU followed in 1982, together with the M-TEU turbocharged 2.0-litre, which later gained an intercooler. Toyota sold the car through its Corolla Store dealerships. In 1986 the third-generation car dropped the Celica prefix and became simply the Supra in Japan as well.
The Celica XX was the Japanese-market name of the Celica Supra, a rear-wheel-drive liftback coupe with an inline-six engine. Sold from 1978 to 1986, it came with 2.0, 2.6 and 2.8-litre sixes and, from 1982, a turbocharged 2.0-litre. It was succeeded by the standalone Supra.
