A60 · 1982–1986RWD

The XX 2000GT used the 1G-GEU, a 2.0-litre twin-cam inline-six with 24 valves, with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. Sold in Japan from 1982 to 1986 as a liftback, it gave buyers who stayed within the 2.0-litre tax class a stronger engine than the single-cam XX 2000.

STORY

The Celica XX went on sale in Japan in 1978 as the home-market version of the Celica Supra, a longer Celica with an inline-six engine. The first generation offered a 2.0-litre M-EU and a 2.6-litre 4M-EU, with a 2.8-litre 5M-EU added in 1980. Engine size mattered in Japan, where annual road tax rose above 2.0 litres. The second generation, the A60, arrived in 1981 with the 1G-EU 2.0-litre six and the 2.8-litre 5M-GEU 2800GT at 175 PS. A 2000GT with the twin-cam 1G-GEU followed in 1982, together with the M-TEU turbocharged 2.0-litre, which later gained an intercooler. Toyota sold the car through its Corolla Store dealerships. In 1986 the third-generation car dropped the Celica prefix and became simply the Supra in Japan as well.
