X70 Wagon 2.8 (5M-GE)

X70 · 1985–1987RWD

This Cressida is the X70 wagon, the MX72, sold in the US from 1985 to 1987. It has a 2.8 litre six-cylinder 5M-GE petrol engine, rear-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. It shares its mechanicals with the X70 sedan, but the wagon ended in the US after 1987, a year before the sedan. The US interior had its own automatic shoulder belts and steering wheel, and the five-speed manual was offered only very rarely, in 1986.

STORY

The Cressida was the export name of the Corona Mark II, a name never used in Japan. The first Mark II built under it, the X30, began production in December 1976. The X60 generation arrived in October 1980, and the US version used a 2.8 litre inline-six. In 1983 the US car received the twin-cam 5M-GE, rated at 143 hp (SAE net). The X80 followed in 1988 in Japan. US sales began for the 1978 model year, and the name ran in most export markets from 1976 to 1992.
