Mt. Haruna (榛名山)
Mountain road · Japan, Gunma

The real road behind the manga's "Akina".
In the manga and anime, Takumi Fujiwara delivers tofu down "Akina", which is Shigeno's shorthand for the real Mt. Haruna road on the west side of Gunma. Where Mt. Akagi is the touge of reputation, Haruna is the touge of source material.
The actual route, Haruna-ko Onsen down to the lower roads, is two lanes of badly maintained asphalt with painted curbs, blind crests and a guard rail that has been replaced repeatedly. It is unremarkable to drive in daylight, which is exactly the point: it became iconic because the manga turned it into a stage, not because the road itself is exceptional.
Modern visitors photograph the corners they recognise from the panels, drive down at a respectful pace, and refuel at the same coffee stalls Initial D drew in. Police presence is heavier than it was twenty years ago; spirited driving is not welcome. The pilgrimage is the point, the road, the panels, and the silence of being where the story happened.
