BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

M-car pace with small-car economy, the i8's blueprint.

The Vision EfficientDynamics, shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, was a plug-in hybrid 2+2 that fused M-car performance with radical efficiency. A three-cylinder turbodiesel paired with two electric motors, one on each axle, for all-wheel drive and a combined 356 hp. It could hit 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds yet return 3.76 L/100 km. BMW put it into production in 2013 as the i8 (switching to a petrol engine).
