GM AUTOnomy

The skateboard-chassis fuel-cell platform that reinvented the car

Shown at the 2002 Detroit auto show, AUTOnomy was GM's vision for a car built entirely around a hydrogen fuel cell and drive-by-wire controls. Its central idea was a flat, roughly six-inch-thick skateboard chassis housing the fuel cell, hydrogen storage, and wheel-mounted electric motors, onto which different body styles could be docked. It laid the conceptual groundwork for the driveable Hy-wire that followed the same year.
