The aerodynamic electric coupe that became the EV1
Unveiled at the 1990 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Impact was a two-seat electric coupe engineered with AeroVironment under Paul MacCready. Its slippery body achieved a 0.19 drag coefficient, then the lowest ever recorded in GM's wind tunnel. Powered by an AC induction motor and a lead-acid battery pack, it accelerated to 60 mph in about eight seconds. The Impact directly spawned the production GM EV1 launched in 1996.
