Mazda Kiyora

A lightweight city car foreshadowing SkyActiv efficiency

Debuting at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the Kiyora (Japanese for 'clean and pure') was a compact urban concept exploring the next generation of high-efficiency small cars. It used a 1.3-liter direct-injection gasoline four-cylinder with Mazda's 'i-stop' idle-reduction system and a six-speed automatic, technologies that fed into the later SkyActiv family. A carbon-fiber body made it around 100 kg lighter than the Mazda2, helping it target roughly 90 g/km of CO2.

Key facts

  • Engine: 1.3L direct-injection gasoline inline-4 with i-stop
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic
  • Body: Carbon fiber, ~100 kg lighter than Mazda2
