A lightweight rotary coupe that pointed toward the RX-8

Shown at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show, the RX-01 was proposed as a smaller, lighter successor to the third-generation RX-7, echoing the ethos of the original first-generation car. It featured a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter 13B-MSP (multi-side-port) rotary in a front-midship position for balance, a 2+2 cabin, and a floating front bumper. Though it never reached production, its rotary and packaging ideas resurfaced in the later RX-8.
