Porsche 989 four-door sedan concept (1988), the front-engined Panamera ancestor, on display at the Porsche Museum

The four-door front-engined sports sedan that predated the Panamera.

Developed between 1988 and 1991, the 989 was Porsche's ambitious attempt at a four-door performance touring sedan that combined 911-inspired styling with practical four-seat packaging. It used a front-mounted, water-cooled V8 driving the rear wheels. Rising costs and a downturn in Porsche's fortunes led to the project's cancellation in January 1992, but its concept foreshadowed the Panamera nearly two decades later.
