2014: James Deane crosses to FD

Moment in drift history · EU / US

James Deane mid-drift in the Worthouse Falken Nissan Silvia S15 at Formula Drift Seattle 2017

After dominating Europe with five Irish and British titles, Deane lands in Formula Drift. The cleanest, calmest pro driving on the grid resets what a chase run is allowed to look like. He wins back-to-back FD titles in 2017 and 2018.

Deane had been competing in European drift since his early teens, Irish Prodrift Championship at fifteen, British titles, a European championship. By 2014 the European mixed-platform field had run out of obvious challenges for him; Formula Drift in the US was the next step.

His 2014 debut FD season was a learning year. He had to adapt European driving rhythm to American V8 power levels, to longer straights, to wider stadium courses. The discipline that travelled with him from Europe, repeatable angle, deliberate steering, no panic on entries, was visible from his first round but took two more seasons to translate into titles.

The 2017 and 2018 FD Pro Championships in the Worthouse Drift Team Nissan Silvia S15 reset what modern pro drift driving could look like. Back-to-back titles, almost no contact, lethal in tandems. Every modern pro driver under thirty studies Deane's footage as a baseline for how to chase clean.
