Honda introduced the Inspire in 1989 as the Accord Inspire, a front-drive sedan with a five-cylinder engine mounted longitudinally ahead of the front axle. A 1992 update enlarged the engine to 2.5 litres, and the second generation of 1995 added a 3.2-litre V6. The 1998 third generation dropped the five-cylinder for V6 power on the US-built Accord platform, and later added the 260 PS Type S. A fourth generation followed in 2003 with a 3.0-litre V6 and cylinder deactivation, and the fifth, released in 2007, used a 3.5-litre V6 based on the North American Accord. Sales ended in 2012.
The Inspire is Honda's mid-size to large sedan for Japan, produced from 1989 to 2012 over five generations. Early cars used a longitudinally mounted five-cylinder, later ones a V6, and the nameplate was closely linked to the Acura TL in North America.
