Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA (2015)
Concept car · 2015 · Hybrid

A shape-shifting coupe that grows a tail to hit a 0.19 drag coefficient.
The Concept IAA - Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile - was a four-door coupe study that physically transforms for the wind. Above about 80 km/h, active panels extend the tail by 390 mm, flaps deploy in the front bumper and the wheels' louvres close, dropping the drag coefficient from an already-slippery 0.25 to a remarkable 0.19. Powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, it previewed both the aero thinking and design cues that would inform Mercedes' future sedans.
