Mitsubishi HSR-II

Active aerodynamics with a 0.20 drag coefficient

A radical research concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, built around 'Active Aero Control': movable canards, flaps and a chin spoiler that reshaped airflow to vary the drag coefficient from a remarkable 0.20 up to 0.40. Its Kevlar-and-composite body housed a 3.0-litre twin-turbo DOHC V6 making 350 hp, backed by an 'Active Footwork System' with four-wheel steering, full-time 4WD, ABS and active suspension for a claimed 300 km/h top speed.

Key facts

  • Engine: 3.0L twin-turbo DOHC V6
  • Power: 350 hp @ 7,000 rpm
  • Torque: 440 Nm from 2,500 rpm
  • Drag coefficient: 0.20 to 0.40 (active aero)
  • Top speed (claimed): 300 km/h (186 mph)
  • Chassis: 4WS, full-time 4WD, active suspension
