The big-block show car that shaped the C3 Corvette
Unveiled by Bill Mitchell at the 1965 New York Auto Show, the Mako Shark II (project XP-830) took the shark theme further with a dramatically sculpted, coke-bottle body. Two examples were built, one a fully functional runner powered by a 427 big-block V8 with Turbo-Hydramatic automatic. Show-car gadgetry included a hinged one-piece front clip, a driver-adjustable rear wing, retractable rear bumpers and knock-off wheels. Its styling closely previewed the third-generation C3 Corvette launched for 1968.
