Ford Gyron

A two-wheeled, gyro-balanced UFO on wheels

Designed by Syd Mead and McKinley Thompson, the Gyron was a futuristic two-wheeled car meant to balance on gyroscopes, with retractable outrigger legs for when stationary. The show car's fiberglass body actually rolled on hidden outrigger wheels via a 5 mph electric motor, gyros being too costly. The original was lost in the 1962 Ford Rotunda fire; only the studio model survives.
