The mid-engined V4 roadster that started the Mustang legend
Unveiled at Watkins Glen on October 7, 1962, the Mustang I was a compact aluminum-bodied two-seat roadster with a mid-mounted Ford Cardinal V4. Test driver Dan Gurney lapped the circuit in the running prototype. Only two were built: a fiberglass mock-up and one fully functional car. Its name and sporting intent carried over to the production Mustang, though the layout did not.
