BMW calls THE 8 X JEFF KOONS the most elaborately designed vehicle in its history, a strictly 99-unit collector edition of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupé that Koons developed with BMW over several years. Where his 2010 M3 GT2 was a single racing Art Car, this is a series-production art object: a riot of eleven pop-art colours applied in an eleven-step, multi-hundred-hour paint process, with superhero-comic “POP!” bursts, speed-vapour striping over the hood and a Lichtenstein-style explosion around the rear roundel, carried inside by a bright red/blue leather cabin. Each buyer received a Koons/Zipse-signed certificate.
